Der Rosenkavalier

There’s an interesting event in Oxford on Sunday 15 October. The Oxford Lieder Festival will be showing the 1926 silent film of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier with live orchestral accompaniment.

The music will be provided by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, conducted by Thomas Kemp, using the chamber-orchestra score Strauss created to accompany the London premiere of the film. Silent films of opera were not as rare as you might think.

The event takes place in Oxford Town Hall on 15 October at 7.00pm and tickets range from £10 to £40. Details from Oxford Lieder or by telephone 01865 591276. Here are a few clips from the film.
