Some of you will have seen that Cheltenham Playhouse’s bid for £50,000 in Culture Recovery Fund money to help it through the pandemic was rejected. With no income from its own shows for six months, the theatre has been eating into its scant reserves. Now a local photographer, James Fear, has launched a bid to raise the money – and more – through the crowdfunding site GoFundMe. The crowdfunding exercise, which aims to raise £100,000, is intended to offer a lifeline for the theatre, which is of great importance in the artistic life of Cheltenham, the only place in the town to watch films and, of course, our temporary home.
